چکیده

This study aimed to examine how native and non-native language experience affects the adults’ perception of nonnative contrasts. More specifically, this study examined the perceptual acquisition of English syllable structures and voicing contrasts by Japanese listeners. The results from thirty-four native listeners of Japanese showed that even the listeners with virtually no exposure to English speech could extract both onset and coda types of structure syllables from the stream of repeated syllables, and the good performance of non-native syllable structures is accounted by the listeners’ bias toward a ‘foreign’ category as well as the native phonology.

Word segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour

Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...

Perceptual assimilation and identification of English consonants by native speakers of Danish

This study explored the relation between the identification of non-native consonants and the perceptual assimilation of non-native consonants to native categories. In Experiment 1, native Danish listeners identified 20 initial English consonants in terms of Danish categories, and then rated the goodness of fit of these matches. The results of this perceptual assimilation experiment were used to...

Native and Non-native Perceptual Dialect Similarity Spaces

The current study examined the role of native language on the perceptual similarity space of regional dialect variation. Native and non-native speakers of American English were asked to group a set of talkers by regional dialect in a free classification task. The two listener groups exhibited similar dialect classification strategies and perceptual similarity structures. However, the non-native...

Influences of listeners' native and other dialects on cross-language vowel perception

This paper examines to what extent acoustic similarity between native and non-native vowels predicts non-native vowel perception and whether this process is influenced by listeners' native and other non-native dialects. Listeners with Northern and Southern British English dialects completed a perceptual assimilation task in which they categorized tokens of 15 Dutch vowels in terms of English vo...

Distinction between Mandarin Tones 2 and 3 for L1 and L2 Listeners

Among the four Mandarin lexical tones, Tone 2 and Tone 3 have been found to be the most confusable perceptually for both native speakers and non-native speakers. This study investigates whether the overall tone duration serves as a perceptual cue and whether L1 and L2 listeners weigh the cue in the same manner in distinguishing the two tones. In doing so, two perceptual experiments using durati...
